On 24 May the Home Secretary unveiled further details of the UK’s new immigration system. While many measures had already been announced, there are new things to know.
The headline is further digitisation of the system, intended to eventually cover everything. We’re already seeing the move towards digital proof of status through the EU Settlement Scheme.
There are no radical changes to Sponsored Worker migration. Additions/ removals to the shortage occupation list (which makes migrant workers more accessible to the UK) have always been a feature, for example there is reference to toughening up measures around criminality. EU nationals are now subject to more stringent exclusion rules than pre-Brexit.
We knew the Graduate route is coming, which should open 1 July 2021, but a new International Sportsperson route is also on the agenda.
Spring 2022 will also introduce a new, unsponsored points-based route to attract the ‘brightest and best’ to the UK, with emphasis on the very high skilled and academically elite. A new Global Business Mobility route is also coming in Spring 2022, which will cover a range of separate business migration options, such as intra company transfers, international agreements for services, representatives of overseas businesses, and secondments. It will be interesting to see how these routes develop.
