A team working for the University of Salford has been shortlisted in two categories at the Diabetes Nursing Awards 2025.
The team, including Dr Melanie Stephens, Professor Louise Ackers, Rincy Sajith and Dr Daniel Parker, beat tough competition to be named as finalists in both the Innovation Award and Research Project of the Year categories.
The project saw the multi-disciplinary group, which included nurse researchers, a social scientist, and a biomechanic scientist, working with local nurses in Uganda to reduce serious diabetes health related complications such as foot ulcers, which can lead to amputations and even death.
On being shortlisted twice for the groundbreaking work, Melanie said: “Being a finalist in two award categories in the Diabetes Nursing Awards has been such a wonderful surprise. The research team wanted to demonstrate what could be achieved when we harness the power of nurse-led initiatives that take an interprofessional team approach. In this instance to make a demonstrable impact on the lives of people living with Type 2 diabetes in Uganda.”
Diabetes Nursing Awards event organiser Emily Mayhew said: “We are thrilled to recognise remarkable individuals who have dedicated themselves to advancing diabetes care and education. Their innovative approaches and tireless efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of people living with diabetes.”
The Diabetes Nursing Awards event will culminate with a complimentary dinner and awards ceremony hosted by Dr Sarah Jarvis MBE at Radisson Blu, Bloomsbury, London between 8pm and 11pm on Friday, June 6.
Organised by leading communications, events and medical education agency Orange Juice Communications, the event promises to be a celebration of nursing excellence and a testament to the unwavering commitment of healthcare professionals in improving diabetes care standards.
