Salford Professor appointed President of the Institute of Acoustics

Professor David Waddington has been appointed as the new President of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA). The appointment was made during the 50th Institute of Acoustics Conference, Acoustics 2024, held in Manchester.
Professor Waddington, Director of the Acoustics Research Centre at Salford, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this prestigious role. His appointment marks a significant milestone in his career and reflects the University’s continued leadership in the field of acoustics.
In his new role, Professor Waddington aims to strengthen the connection between academic research and industry practice, with a particular focus on sustainability in acoustics. He also plans to oversee the integration of the EPSRC-funded UK Acoustics Network (UKAN+) into the IOA structure, enhancing research coordination and support within the acoustics community.
Professor Wadington said: “I am honoured to take on this role and look forward to working with colleagues across the industry and in government to advance the field of acoustics.
“Our goal is to ensure that the IOA continues to be at the forefront of acoustic innovation, education, and professional development.”
The outgoing President, Alistair Somerville, expressed his gratitude to Professor Waddington. He said: “I would like to thank David for his support and the lead role he has taken in promoting the Institute of Acoustics in academia. I look forward to his stated strategic objective of promoting research in acoustics and connecting research and industry with our IOA Parliamentary Liaison Group to generate more impact.”
Professor Waddington’s new role will enhance the profile of our new Acoustics Building, positioning it as a national and international centre of excellence. As IOA President, Professor Waddington will foster collaborations between academia, industry, and government, attracting high-profile research projects and funding opportunities. This appointment promises to accelerate Salford’s impact on society and industry.
