Open Kitchen is going reusable on booze!!

Open Kitchen has partnered with Sustainable Wine Solutions and Hammonds of Knutsford to be one of the first hospitality businesses in the North to switch to 100% reusable bottles for our wine supply.

Like the milk man of old, our new supplier will collect all of our used wine bottles (when they deliver the next batch – no extra journeys), wash them and refill them with beautiful plonk.

Reusable bottles are less energy and materials intensive and more labour intensive, meaning we are reducing our carbon footprint, and creating green jobs at the same time!

Quality wine sourcing remains top priority. Our partners at Sustainable Wine Solutions work with independent, organic, minimal intervention, and biodynamic vineyards to source beautiful wines that are produced in a way that look after our planet, and pay a fair price to producers. We’ll also be keeping our transport miles as low as possible by sourcing only from Western Europe.

The wine is imported in reusable 1000L tanks, which leads to 55% less CO2e in transport compared to shipping in bottles because of the huge reduction in packaging weight. Wines are then bottled in the UK and delivered to our door.

All wines are delivered in reusable crates, made from 100% recycled plastic, and Sustainable Wine Solutions also reduce waste by not adding elements like foil around the bottle top and neck.

Lighter weight wine bottles are sourced as part of the the service to reduce carbon emissions in both the production of the bottle and each delivery or collection journey!

All of this adds up to Open Kitchen’s wine related carbon emissions dropping by a whopping 70% even after we factor in a few broken bottles.

This is a wonderful addition to Open Kitchen’s sustainable event services at People’s History Museum, and through our events catering service delivered across Greater Manchester through Open Kitchen Catering, and is a key part of our ambition to be Greater Manchester’s most sustainable food and drink service.

This is part of a bigger change we’ll be making with our partners at People’s History Museum, but we’re keeping the big news a secret for now, watch this space for updates.
