Our journey with Nacoa started in late 2022, when my sister, Georgia sent a few messages about a charity that had been referenced, by Calum Best on the SAS TV series.
Georgia wanted to know more and was determined to be involved in some way, so I reached out to Calum and he pointed us in the direction of getting involved.
Our dad was an alcoholic, and Nacoa is something we would have benefited from growing up. Sadly, we lost him late last year and this is where we realised, we had met the Nacoa family for a reason at just the right time.
The 1st gala managed to raise just over £6k, and then the 2nd raised just over £100k!
It is just the 2 of us that have organised and ran the events so far, and at some points have put our own money into getting it off the ground (we were burnt badly this year by a sponsor that never paid but came on the evening – lesson learnt!!)
My role within the hospitality industry means, I get to attend lots of events, dinners, networking etc and the thought process with the gala is to reach the people that just don’t know.
They don’t know how serious the situation is un the UK, with 1 in 5 children living with a parent dependant on alcohol, they don’t have any idea.
However, the flip side is – since doing this, so many people that we know personally, have grown up with or met professionally have come forward to share their experiences too.
Last year our host even voiced his upbringing – after keeping quiet in year 1.
This is why we have the drinks on the table, at each person’s personal preference -to reach those that enjoy a glass of wine at the table with dinner – (sadly we learn that sometimes ‘sober’ scares people)…but it also means they come, enjoy an evening and learn something whilst raising money. It seems to work so far, and helps us to reach a wider audience that seem to be blind to what is actually happening around them.
Anyway….any support would be appreciated and even better if you get chance to come!
