Member Spotlight: Sam Hall, Senior Partner at Hall Brown Family Law

Career Highlight:

Setting up Hall Brown Family Law with James Brown 9 years ago, and subsequently growing nationally, has certainly been a privilege and a highlight. During this time, I think one of the main highpoints has been acting on behalf of numerous high-profile sporting professionals, celebrities and champions of industry, whose net-worth run into the multi-million pounds, most of whom we are unable to mention due to confidentiality purposes, which is absolute.

Name three words that describe your personality:

Honest, positive and funny (looking).

What’s the best thing about pro-manchester:

The people. Pro-manchester are masters at networking. They have the connections to put you in touch with the right people, and in turn help to grow your business. As a member of the future pro-manchester committee some 15 years ago, many of my trusted advisers today are the people I originally met back then.

What are your priorities for 2024?

At this stage, planning to get ahead of my Christmas shopping and not leave it until the 23rd of December, yet again!

Priorities for the business, as always, is to continue to strive for excellence. That is service excellence to the client. We’re thrilled to be in the top pile of independent legal directories, Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners whereby we retained our Tier One status and team excellence again this year. We were also named in The Sunday Times’ top ten medium size companies to work for in the whole of UK, so we’re immensely proud of that.

We’ve also been working hard behind the scenes to bring some new offerings to our people next year, so we’re very excited to be able to launch our tailor-made employee benefits scheme in January 2025.

What do you think are the most important things going on in Manchester at the moment?

It has to be the investment in infrastructure. It really makes Manchester the place to be at the moment. Improvements to our transport infrastructure, bolstering economic growth and environmental gaols, as well as support for regeneration is all set to really enhance the customer experience and boost businesses throughout the North-West.

There seems to be a real buzz around the city, specifically the business community. I am an optimist at heart, but notwithstanding this, I am very excited about what Hall Brown Family Law can achieve in the next 5 – 10 years and how the city will play a strong role in this.

Favourite meeting place in Manchester:

For me, you can’t beat a 5.30 pint in Mulligans. It’s the best way to round off the week.

Are there any particular types of businesses that you would like to meet:

Given that we specialise in wealth protection (co-habitation agreements and pre / post-nups) or preserving wealth (divorce and separations, etc), we have close working relationships with trusted advisers such as banks, accountants, financial advisers, wealth managers and so on, but I also really like meeting young business owners.

The enthusiasm, resilience and drive you need to start and nurture a business is infectious, and I love being around that energy. I also enjoy mentoring and supporting people at the beginning of their business journey. Whilst it’s mad to think that we’re getting on for a decade of Hall Brown Family Law, those first three years were the hardest of my professional life to date. I’m often guilty of looking back on those times through rose tinted spectacles, but to be able to encourage somebody who is in the middle of that, to reassure them, to implore them to keep believing and to treat every day as a new day, and when it gets easier (because it will) to tell them to stay humble, is a reward in itself.
