Having Difficult Conversations Well – Sarah McDowell

‘Why do highly talented people who run very successful business put off having honest conversations to the point where they can no longer be ignored? What is it about sitting down with someone and speaking honestly that makes us bury our head in the sand?It makes very little sense, given that problems don’t go away but rather multiply in size and seriousness if left unresolved. And when you consider that the vast majority of people would rather hear about the problems they cause than have others discuss them without their involvement the disconnect between what leaders do and what people want is baffling.

Until …. you consider how much we dislike the discomfort we can feel and how we’ve often never been taught the techniques that help us have high quality conversations even when they are difficult.Given the importance honest conversations for high performing teams, delivering results, individual wellbeing, collaboration, and engagement and considering it’s the decent thing to do everyone in organisations should know how to have honest conversations. In fact it should be part of the induction process.

Getting Succession Planning Right- Roderic Yapp

Entrepreneurial spirit, drive and the sheer desire to make things happen are essential in getting a business started. But what does it take to ensure a business outlasts the founders and continues to create value for future generations?

Succession planning is a key element in creating long-term value and many investors including private equity firms are paying closer attention to the plans that ensure the future success of the organisation.

Succession planning is not about choosing favourites based on arbitrary measures such as presenteeism. It is about identifying the attitude, skills and experience that will deliver the next phase of the organisation’s growth. Some of the team will have many of these skills, some will need to develop them.

In this speech, Roderic will talk share some of the principles used in the Royal Marines and the Nuclear industry so that you can identify, develop and leverage your future leaders and set the organisation up for success in the future.
