WEBINAR TITLE:           Patenting Medical and Biotech Inventions

DATE:                               9 July

TIME:                                12:30pm (UK time)

DURATION:                    40 mins

SPEAKER:                        Philip Webber

REGISTRATION LINK:  https://bit.ly/med-biotech

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:

Patents on medicines are common, but can you patent a gene or a protein? A bacteria, a transgenic plant or a transgenic animal?  Whilst the general patenting rules apply to all of these inventions, there are a number of issues that apply only to inventions in the medical and biotech fields.  This webinar will cover what can be patented in the medical and biotech fields, and will discuss some of the special requirements and rules which apply in these fields.

Patents are vitally important for the pharmaceutical industry – it can take up to US$1 billion to bring a new therapeutic drug onto the market. Without the patent system to protect such investments, there would be no new medicines. Patents and patent applications are also particularly important to small biotech companies because they are often some of the few valuable assets that biotech companies can present to potential investors when seeking investment.

SPEAKER:

Philip is a qualified UK and European patent attorney, and a partner in Dehns’ Life Sciences Group with a degree in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from Cambridge University and a PhD in molecular biology from Warwick University. His work is largely with start-ups, small/medium size companies and universities with inventions in the pharmaceutical or biotechnological fields. He has over 25 years’ experience in dealing with the issues which are important to such entities, such as the financial constraints of start-ups, the need to develop IP strategies for a company’s products and the pressures upon academics to publish their work. Philip’s work involves writing and filing patent applications, and getting them granted for his clients all around the world. He has particular expertise in obtaining European patents (including dealing with EPO Opposition and Appeal procedures) and US patents. He also provides advice on IP landscapes and Freedom to Operate (FTO) advice on competitors’ patents.

WEBINAR TITLE:           An introduction to IP: Designs

DATE:                               16 July

TIME:                                12:30pm (UK time)

DURATION:                    30 mins

SPEAKERS:                      Greg Iceton / Dave Paton

REGISTRATION LINK:  https://bit.ly/designs_webinar

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:

As well as designing a product to work efficiently, most manufacturers make a significant investment in the appearance of their products. Dyson vacuum cleaners and Apple computers are items that are as well known for their original appearance as for their technical capabilities. Such investment often brings a high return in terms of value added to products, but how can that investment be protected?

Although the basic concept of design registration is simple, the law relating to it is rather complex. In this webinar Greg Iceton and Dave Paton discuss how to make the most out of design protection irrespective of the product.

SPEAKERS:

  • David Paton

David is qualified UK and European patent attorney, as well as a European design attorney. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath.  As a European Design attorney, David regularly deals with registered and unregistered design portfolios, as well as other IP matters.

He specialises in the mechanical and electromechanical engineering fields and is well versed in a wide variety of different technologies. In particular, he has a high level of experience with aeronautical and automotive technologies, medical devices, consumer appliances, and manufacturing machinery.

  • Greg Iceton

Greg is a qualified European and Chartered Patent Attorney based in Dehns’ Munich office. He holds a degree in Physics with Astrophysics from Keele University.

Greg prosecutes patent and design applications in various fields including ICT, electrical and mechanical engineering. He also handles patent applications relating to business methods and software. Greg acts for many SMEs as well as large corporate clients.

WEBINAR TITLE:                         An introduction to IP: Trade Marks

DATE:                                             30 July

TIME:                                              12:30pm (UK time)

DURATION:                                  30 mins

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:

Trade marks are an essential part of doing business, and can come in a number of forms – such as words, numerals, graphic designs, shapes, colours and even sounds.  A trade mark is a sign used to distinguish your goods/services from those of other businesses.  Registering a trade mark can help the owner to stop others using the same or a similar sign in a way that confuses customers, takes advantage of their reputation or damages their brand.

In this webinar, Alexandra Nott and Adam Kellett discuss the sorts of trade marks that can be protected, the benefits of registering a trade mark, and the process for doing so.

SPEAKERS:

  • Alexandra Nott

Alexandra is a Trade Mark attorney based in Dehns’ Brighton office.   Alexandra assists in a variety of UK, EU, and overseas trade mark matters for a wide-range of clients from individuals to multinational corporations. She assists clients operating in a number of industries including sport, cosmetics, medical technology and healthcare, media/entertainment, security, and hospitality.

  • Adam Kellett

Adam is a UK Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and EU Trade Mark Attorney based in Dehns’ London office.    Adam works with clients in a variety of industries, including the energy, construction, insurance, electronics, software, technology, food and drink, media/entertainment, healthcare and leisure industries. He assists with all aspects of Trade Mark Attorney practice.

WEBINAR TITLE:           Supplementary Protection Certificates – Part 2

DATE:                               13 August

TIME:                                12:30pm

DURATION:                    30 mins

SPEAKER:                        Chris Goddard

REGISTRATON LINK:  https://bit.ly/SPCs2

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:

Supplementary Protection Certificates provide a valuable extension to patent protection in Europe for pharmaceutical, veterinary and plant protection products.  Following on from Chris’ introduction to the SPC system in part 1, the second webinar in this series will take an in depth look at the current “grey areas” of the SPC system.  This webinar will review some recent cases from the CJEU which have considered what can be protected by an SPC and how far that protection extends.

Hosted by Chris Goddard, qualified European and UK patent attorney and a Partner at Dehns.

SPEAKER:

Chris is a qualified European and UK patent attorney and a Partner at Dehns. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in with a degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) and was awarded a PhD, also by the University of Cambridge. He works for a variety of clients from sole-inventors and small biotech companies to multinational corporations. He works with inventions from a broad range of chemical technologies including organic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, drug delivery formulations, diagnostic assays, medical devices, solar cells and renewable energy. He provides patent drafting, filing, international prosecution and strategic IP portfolio advice and has experience in oppositions and appeals before the EPO.

WEBINAR TITLE:           An introduction to IP: Freedom to Operate

WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:

Are you ready to commercialise your invention? What do you know about other people’s patents? Do you have Freedom to Operate?

Having your own patent does not mean that you can ignore other people’s patents. Before you start commercialising your invention, it is prudent to do a Freedom to Operate (FTO) search to try to find any patents that are relevant to your product or process.

In this webinar, Dehns Partner and UK Patent Attorney Philip Webber outlines the reasons for undertaking an FTO search and the 3 stages of the FTO search and analysis.
