The casting team of The Great British Bake Off are excited to announce that the applications are now open for series 16. They’re on the lookout for talented home bakers from all walks of life and are specifically trying to reach out to the LGBTQIA+ community to let people know that they can apply.

They want to make the tent a welcoming and inclusive place for all, so they always reach out to communities that are currently underrepresented on our screens to try and spread the word. Here’s a message you could use to help get the word out:

Join the PROTEST to amplify Queer Voices:

Marking the 21st anniversary of the repeal of Section 28 in England and Wales, leading Northwest Arts company IAP:MCR launches their latest project: PROTEST!

In 1988 coinciding with the height of the AIDS crisis; less than 10% of British adults thought that same-sex relations were ‘acceptable’.  Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government  subsequently introduced Section 28 of the Local Government Act which prohibited the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ by schools and local authorities. In direct response to this, and as an act of protest and defiance, over 20,000 people took to Manchester’s streets to express their anger… making it the biggest single LGBTQ+ demonstration in British history. This extraordinary event is the starting point for PROTEST!

IAP:MCR want to meet anyone affected by Section 28: the stifled students, the silenced teachers, the organisers, and the tireless activists who fought right up until its repeal in 2003. They are particularly looking for the queer voices and untold stories that will enrich and refine the history of LGBTQ+ protest.  These stories will be recorded and find a permanent home in Manchester’s public archives.

It’s part of this project, IAP:MCR will also recruit volunteers to conduct these brand-new interviews with LGBTQ+ people in the Northwest who were at the demonstration, or who have engaged in dissent, or who were affected by social attitudes and prejudice over the past 25 years.

To find out more about how to get involved in PROTEST! as an interviewee or as a volunteer interviewer, please contact Rosheen O’Hanlon at [email protected]

We Are Survivors is engaged in a project with Alliance Manchester Business School (University of Manchester) and they were successful in becoming a VCFSE organisation that has been taken on to create a real life project for a group of MBA Students. Think like the tasks/teams on The Apprentice.

The 5 MBA Students (known as Team Tango) are looking at We Are Survivors impact as an organisation on the awareness of the issue of male sexual violence; how it can better plan our messaging and directly delivery response and are collecting and analysing data and its already fascinating! Using their client engagement data, they’re already showing us trends that the charity just didn’t have the expertise to see.

So Team Tango are now looking at understanding public awareness around sexual harm affecting men in Greater Manchester and they have developed a really simple survey, which of course is entirely voluntary, and no personally identifiable information is being collected. The goal of this is to understand public awareness around sexual harm affecting men and to assess familiarity with the support offered by We Are Survivors. By sharing your insights, you’re helping them to enhance outreach and education efforts, working towards their vision of ensuring that no male survivor is left behind.

We Are Survivors would be so grateful if you could share with anyone you know in Greater Manchester and ask them to take a few moments to type a few things into this survey with their opinions etc  https://www.qualtrics.manchester.ac.uk/jfe/form/SV_42WizqCCYYtuEaa

Greater Manchester Police: Independent Community Scrutiny Panel

The Independent Community Scrutiny Panel is a good way of getting your communities voice heard and making positive changes for your community.

Once every 2 months the group comes together to review Body Worn Videos of stop searches and suggest where they could be improved- whether that be directly providing feedback to the officer involved, or through force wide training provided to all officers.

Only by hearing the issues of the communities from members of those communities can they get better as a force and improve our working practices, so it is important to us that they get as many people from as many backgrounds as possible to join the ICSP so that we can truly understand how to address any issues with the use of police powers. These scrutiny panels give you a voice that GMP will listen to.

Becoming an ICSP member is fantastic opportunity to play a vital part in improving trust and confidence in GMP and building better relations with our community.  You will become part of a team local people working with your local policing team on a voluntary basis.

What would I be doing as an ICSP member?

As an ICSP member you would be meeting with a group of community members and your local policing team on a voluntary basis where you will be provided with data and videos of stop searches. You will be given the opportunity to provide honest feedback on what you think as well as listening to other people’s views. The also seek feedback on how their practices impact on communities, whether that is the reality or the perception, especially where disproportionality is highlighted.

Please contact for more information and a chat about how to become an Independent Community Scrutiny Panel Member
