Buildings that ‘walk the walk’: catalysing climate action & demonstrating corporate values

Greater Manchester has committed to be carbon neutral by 2038, and with the UK hosting the major international climate summit, COP26, in November, businesses in the region are increasingly focusing on the practical actions that can be taken to demonstrate leadership on climate change. The operation of buildings accounts for around 30 per cent of the UK’s total carbon footprint, mainly from heating, cooling and electricity use, and the spaces companies occupy exemplify the values they wish to promote – which is increasingly important to the attraction and retention of talent.

This event, being delivered in partnership between UKGBC, pro-manchester and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, is targeted at corporate occupiers in Greater Manchester wanting to better understand the role buildings play in delivering emissions reductions and contributing to wider corporate sustainability goals. It will explore what occupiers can do to tackle emissions from their owned or occupied buildings. Some key topics that will be covered include:

  • Importance of buildings – their symbolic role and impact on carbon footprint.
  • Translating high-level corporate commitments to real estate.
  • Occupier challenges and solutions – e.g. lease structures, multi let buildings.

Who should attend?  This event will be most suitable for colleagues who have areas of responsibility that influence facilities management, office management, procurement, corporate real estate or sustainability. It will also have relevance for colleagues working in corporate communications.
