GM LGBTQ+ Community Network Newsletter
Monday, 13th November 2023Good Afternoon,
Remembrance Sunday is this Sunday, LGBT Foundation Operation Equality and Fighting With Pride would love support from our LGBT+ Veterans or Serving Personnel throughout Greater Manchester. The Main Event is centred around the Cenotaph in Manchester City Centre, we have been invited to form part of the official parade to the Cenotaph.
It was only 2 years ago that LGBT Veterans who were discharged between 1967 – 2000 were invited to march at the cenotaph in London as part of the remembrance service on Sunday 14th November, which is thanks to Fighting with Pride
I have secured tickets for refreshments in the Central Library, post parade and then maybe go for a drink or 2 in the City Centre.

This is for everyone, regardless of singing experience or skills!
Manchester Pride – I Choose Kindness
Manchester Pride has produced a powerful film as part of the anti-hate campaign, ‘I Choose Kindness’. The film, which showcases real life victims of hate crimes, highlights the abuse, violence and intimidation faced by LGBTQ+ people and encourages people to ‘choose kindness’ and show each other compassion so everyone feels safe to be their true selves. The I Choose Kindness campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hate crime, providing resources for its victims and allies, and promoting a culture of kindness and respect throughout the celebration of LGBTQ+ expression and culture.

Manchester Cathedral, Saturday 2 December, 7pm
The Sunday Boys are back with their annual Christmas concert, exploring the meaning of the festive season through a queer lens.
Now a staple in the queer Christmas calendar, A Very Queer Christmas 2023 “We never met in churches” sees the choir creatively exploring the stories of the season and themes of winter, as well as LGBTQ+ rights and celebration of all the identities in our community.
Featuring music by Kelly Clarkson, John Grant, Kate Bush, Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson and Benjamin Britten, this concert will kick off the Christmas season in the stunning surroundings of Manchester Cathedral.
The evening will also feature texts from Jo Clifford’s ‘The Gospel According To Jesus Queen of Heaven’ and a new carol by Rylan Gleave. Survey / Study / Consultation:
Victim Voice – GMCA Survey
We are committed to understanding the experiences of victims of crime from initially reporting the crime to the police and at various stages through the criminal justice system by establishing a GM wide victim survey.
We need your assistance to ensure that the questions that we ask in the survey are the correct ones and they are written in a way that is easily understood and properly examine the sensitive nature of different experiences.
Working with our survey provider, DJS research, we want to arrange a number of 1-1 discussions, to take place within the next couple of weeks with a range of different people who have been a victim of crime and have reported the crime to the police. The information from each of the sessions will remain anonymous and be brought together to develop a first draft of the survey questionnaire, which we will be happy to share with everyone who has taken part.
Thank you so much in anticipation of identifying any individuals from the LGBTQ+ community that you think would be willing to support us with this work appreciating that timescales are rather challenging! Please contact Lindsay Dunn, GMCA for further details [email protected]
Have you thought about HIV and COVID-19? Do you think they’re similar or different?
Hi, my name is Sophie and I work at The University of Edinburgh with Jaime Garcia-Iglesias on a project called ‘Viral Memories: from HIV to COVID-19 and Beyond’. The project explores gay men’s experiences of COVID-19 and memories of HIV.
We’re inviting gay men, living in the UK, aged 18-25 or aged 45+, to take part in an online confidential interview (lasting for around 1 hour).
There are no right or wrong answers and you do not need to have to have specific memories (or any memories of HIV at all!) to take part. We want to hear from everyone.
There’s more information about the project here: https://www.ed.ac.uk/usher/research/projects/viral-memories-from-hiv-to-covid-19-and-beyond
Interested in taking part? Then sign up here: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/edinburgh/testpiscf
Or, email Sophie ([email protected]) or Jaime ([email protected]).
If you register your interest, you’ll be entered into a raffle for the chance to win an £80 Amazon voucher. If you’re selected for an interview, you will be given a £20 Amazon voucher as a thank you.
Any questions, please feel free to contact Sophie ([email protected]) or Jaime ([email protected]).
Study ON LGBTQ+ Alcohol & Drug Use
My name is Matthew, and I’m a trainee psychologist – currently studying for my doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
If you are 18+ and live in the UK, and identify as LGBTQ+, please consider taking part in my research study about alcohol and substance use.
There is a distinct lack of research into alcohol and substance use that looks at the experiences of the separate sections of the LGBTQ+ population, and the past and present experiences that may shape the way in which substances are used. I hope to use my research to inform further our knowledge of the factors that influence alcohol and substance use for LGBTQ+ people and increase the way in which health services assess alcohol and substance difficulties for the LGBTQ+ population. You can take part in this study regardless of whether you drink alcohol or use recreational drugs.
The study is an anonymous survey and takes 10-15 minutes to complete: Please see attached:

Touchstones Rochdale:
Heritage Coordinator (Part Time) Deadline 14th November 2023
They are currently recruiting for a Heritage Coordinator who will play a key role in the coordination and delivery of an exciting new National Lottery Heritage Funded project, titled The Dining Room. This will include working closely with key Community Partners, the Team at Touchstones Rochdale, commissioned artists and external specialists to oversee the different phases of the delivery plan. The Dining Room will reimagine our traditional museum space from a static, predominantly object-based, display focussed on a narrow interpretation of Rochdale’s heritage, to an engaging and vibrant space (working title ‘The Dining Room)’, designed to be welcoming to all communities and to tell the heritage stories of Rochdale’s diverse cultures.
Using the unifying theme of food as a starting point the space will become a communal eating area complete with a café and spaces for food-related activities, enriched by innovative heritage displays that will draw on often unseen items from our collections complemented by the stories and contributions of local communities. Throughout the redevelopment, we will be working with representatives from diverse communities across Rochdale to inform and shape every aspect of the reimagined museum. We will also commission artists to work with the core community members (the Community and Young Curators we will be working with to curate the opening displays) as well as reach out to communities across the Borough of Rochdale to create three heritage-inspired artistic interventions (digital, textile and installation) responding to the theme and unique heritage of the space being restored and revealed through the capital redevelopment project.
If you are passionate about increasing access to cultural experiences and creativity, then this role might be for you! More information about the opportunity here.
