GM LGBTQ+ Community Network Newsletter

Friday, 31st March 2023

Afternoon All:

Today is Transgender Day of Visibility and Just Like Us UK wanted to share some really positive research they’ve just released.

Our research has found that, if you know a trans person, you’re twice as likely to be a trans ally.

Three quarters (74%) of those who say they are not supportive of trans people don’t even know a trans person in real life. So the research shows what we imagined to be true, which is that transphobia is so commonly rooted in a fear of the unknown.

The research has also found that the majority of young adults are supportive of trans people, and lesbians are the most likely in the LGB+ community to be trans allies.

Great Indecencies shows a world pre and post-1967’s Sexual Offences Act.

7.30pm Friday 31st March & Saturday 1st April 2023

Before decriminalisation, thousands of men were prosecuted, even imprisoned, for being homosexual. Men like Alan Turing, the pioneering mathematician, who broke the Enigma Code, which is credited to bringing the Second World War to an end, was prosecuted for ‘gross indecency’ in 1952. Turing was forced to undergo chemical castration and took his life two years later.

Great Indecencies is the culmination of Legacy of ’67IAP:MCR’s year-long arts and heritage project, which explores how legal changes from 1967 onwards have directly affected LGBTQ+ people during a time of enormous changes in the public perception of homosexuality. In the fifty-six years after the Sexual Offences Act 1967, there has been further legislation relating to the age of consent, the role of LGBTQ+ people in the armed forces, improved partnership, inheritance, and adoption rights.

Yet at the same time, there has been the rise and fall of Section 28, which outlawed the ‘promotion of homosexuality’ by local authorities. The UK is experiencing an epidemic of hate crime against LGBTQ+ people and a growing demonisation of trans people.

LGBTQ+ 50+ Physical Activity Research Project with Substance: Callout for Participants
Participants are needed for a project focusing on the stories of 50+ individuals in the LGBTQ+ community and their experiences with physical activity, sport, and movement. The aim is to gather as many stories and experiences to help explore what helps and prevents people from being active as they age and to provide recommendations of good practice for service providers (e.g., leisure centres, sports clubs, and community groups). They are keen to address the invisibility of LGBTQ+ awareness in physical activity, sport and movement practice and provision and make it easier for the community to move more.

As this work will requires stories from individuals from the LGBTQ+ community, it would be great to have as many voices as they can in this! Initial ideas will be developed through an online focus group (lasting 30 minutes to an hour) with up to 10 people, in which we would develop an interview schedule around topics you see as key to hearing about the experiences of the 50+ LGBTQ+ community. From there, those who would like to would take on a Research Ambassador role for this work and undertake interviews (lasting 30 minutes to an hour) with other members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The Research Ambassador role has been developed from the understanding of an experts through experience approach, members of the 50+ LGBTQ+ community know their community far more than they do, so it is a way to develop a more conversational feel, whilst making the interview partner as comfortable as possible.

Let’s start though a focus group to discuss ideas and meet everyone in early April. If you are interested in being involved please contact: Charlie Grosset  [email protected]

HOME MCR: Drag Addict Tues 18 July – Sat 12 Aug

Tickets are now available for Drag Addict a spleen different new musical full of high stakes, high emotions and even higher heels!

With choreography by former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, and high energy bangers and catchy tunes by Matt Caine and David Andrew Wilson, this new musical takes to the HOME stage this summer.

It’s summer in Manchester. It’s raining (obviously) and on Canal Street storm clouds of another sort are gathering – Club Fierce is under threat. But Dolly Ravage – godmother of the Gay Village – isn’t going down without a fight. Can she recruit six queens to slay the runway and reinvent the club as the all-new House of Ferocity in time to save it from property developers? Or will the arrival of the mysterious Bobby Carter from America – hiding a secret that could change everything – derail her battle to save the soul of the scene?

Drag Addict combines musical theatre, pop music and drag and creates one fierce, funny, uplifting and heart-warming show!
