Opportunities/Challenges in the Application of Ethics within AI Colloquium

We would like to invite you to attend the “Opportunities and Challenges in the Application of Ethics within Artificial Intelligence Colloquium” which will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University, Business School, Room G.34 (North Atrium), in person on 30th June 2022 (09.15-16.00). The event is an in-person event and features a series of keynotes (virtual and in person) from experts within the UK, including an opening virtual keynote by Dr David Leslie, Director of Ethics and Responsible Innovation Research at The Alan Turing Institute.

 Globally, there is growing acknowledgement that those involved in the development and deployment of AI products and services should act responsibly and conduct their work within robust ethical frameworks. The ethical artificial intelligence principal to practice gap is a significant challenge for all stakeholders including researchers, businesses, data scientists and innovators. It is therefore vital that stakeholders identify and understand the implications of unintended harms and consequences of AI, in their research, or development of new ideas, products and services. To build public trust there must be public dialogue, engagement, and the opportunity of co-production from the conceptualisation phase. The policy and legal landscape is very dynamic. New forthcoming legislation in the use of AI (such as the proposed EU Regulatory framework) will be one of the most disruptive forces that the technology industry has faced. Governments are prepared to sign up to ethical principles and recommendations (UNESCO) but participation is voluntary. The aim of this colloquium is to explore the opportunities and challenges in the application of ethics within artificial intelligence from different stakeholder perspectives.
