Wednesday, 11th August 2021

Each week we get to know one of our members a little better. This week it’s Darren Scott, Founder and Creative Partner – Truth Creative…

Career highlight?

Meeting my wife – Jo. We met during our time together at global ad agency McCann Erickson. Jo is also my business partner at Truth. My smartest business move was partnering with someone who is much smarter, energetic and personable than I could ever be.

What are you reading at the moment?

I am currently reading, (well listening to, I prefer audiobooks as I can listen to them whilst driving to work) Billion Dollar Loser by Reeves Wiedeman. It is the story of the rise of WeWork under Adam Neumann.

What are you watching at the moment?

I have a Masterclass subscription so I tend to watch that a lot when I can get the TV to myself. I am currently part-way through the Digital Music Course with Timbaland. I also really love shows that combine Travel and food so I am also binge-watching the late Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Parts Unknown‘ series on Netflix.

Favourite band or artist?

I am a great lover of music of all genres. I really love Bob Dylan, hence my eldest son being named after him – Dylan not Bob. I was first switched on to music in the late 80s first by The Smiths, then the whole Madchester scene in my early teens. I also love early hip-hop and Soul, but my go to album will always be the Stone Roses. It just takes me straight back to my care-free teenage years.

Hidden / Useless Talent?

I am a published poet.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

A lot, in fact I recently wrote a blog on this, read it here. But the one thing I would say to anyone at that age. Focus your effort on finding something you are passionate about and pursue that 110%. If you love something, being successful at it becomes a lot easier.

Favourite meeting place in Manchester?

Our new office.

Favourite place to visit in Manchester?

Old Trafford – I have been to pretty much every Manchester United home game since 1983.

Best concert / gig / performance you’ve been to?

I used to go to a gig a week pre-kids and my favourite venue was always the Apollo. I will never forget watching Oasis there for their 10 year anniversary straight after they had just played to 250,000 at Knebworth. When I was 15 my mum stopped me going to see the Roses at Spike Island, so seeing the reunion at Heaton Park was amazing. But the gig I will never forget is the Versus Cancer gig at the Arena which we helped organise. I sat in an empty arena next to Paul Weller watching Noel Gallagher perform his full acoustic set for the sound check to just the two of us. I also met Mani, so not a bad day.

If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, whose would they be? Why?

Personally Eric Cantona – no explanation required there. Professionally, Elon Musk – I am a huge fan of how technology changes the world, and he is at the forefront of that. His diverse game-changing tech companies started with PayPal and now include pioneering leaps in space exploration with Space-X, autonomous vehicles with Tesla, solar energy with Solar City and neuroscience with Neuralink. So to get inside his mind and thought process would be insightful.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 12 months?

I am just really looking forward to getting back to normal. We have worked with a lot of new clients over the last 2 years that we have never actually met face-to-face (other than Zoom). So having them visit our new office will be exciting.
