Common Purpose launches free UK101 Leadership programme for young leaders

19th June 2020, 5:22 pm

International leadership organization, Common Purpose, is launching UK101, a new initiative supporting young people in the UK, to develop their leadership skills. This free, interactive, online programme, is open to 18-25 year olds and offers participants the chance to connect with each other and explore the UK101 leadership model, which has been co-created with 1,000 young people.

Marie Mohan, Chief Executive, Common Purpose UK, said: “We need to invest in our young people at this challenging time.  A recent Resolution Foundation Report* revealed that one third of 18-24 year olds have lost their jobs or been furloughed; so this programme couldn’t be more timely, as the Covid crisis is impacting them disproportionately.

“UK101 has been developed for, and with, young people and brings a fresh perspective on what it means to be a young leader with its focus on four leadership characteristics:  radical, embracing, strategic and resilient.

“This is the latest addition to our Common Purpose global ‘Legacy’ campaign that invests in young people, across the world, so they can become a connected generation of leaders with a clear vision for what their legacy will be.  Complementing UK101, we are also running place-based Legacy programmes which engage young people in shaping their cities ahead.  The first of these took place in Newcastle, in March, and many more are scheduled for the autumn including Bradford and Leeds.”

Applications are now open via commonpurpose.org/uk101 for the inaugural UK101 programme, which begins 22 June 2020.

Build your leadership skills this summer and connect with peers from across the UK! Register for #UK101, a free online leadership programme launching June 22. It’s a fresh perspective on leadership, entirely co-created by and for the younger generation: commonpurpose.org/uk101

About the UK101 Leadership Model

  • UK101, which has been in development since early 2019, takes inspiration from the remarkable leaders who started the National Health Service in 1948. This bold act of leadership created what subsequently became a symbol of the values that unite the UK. The initiative is named UK101 because young people today, who are looking to create their generation’s own unique legacy, will be the leaders when the NHS turns 101 years old, in thirty years’ time.
  • The UK101 online programme is underpinned by the UK101 Leadership Model. The model was co-created with over 1000 young people, aged 18-25, across the UK through a combination of surveys, workshops and consultations. The model articulates what kinds of leaders this generation wants to become in order to create their own unique legacy.
  • UK101 is supported and made possible by Trust for London, Penny Appeal, Barrow Cadbury Trust, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland, Blagrave Trust, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Northern Ireland Community Foundation, William Grant Foundation, and Clore Foundation.
  • On completion, participants earn a digital UK101 leadership badge for their CV and online profiles. Applications are now open via org/uk101 for the inaugural programme, which begins 22 June 2020.
